Maxxing Everything: Dictionary.com Crowns 'Maxxing' Its 2026 Word of the Year
Internet Culture·October 27, 2026

Dictionary.com has picked "maxxing" as its 2026 Word of the Year, a pick that reflects how a slang term born on online forums has spread into everyday conversation about self-improvement, artificial intelligence and fitness.
The word means trying to maximize or optimize something. It can stand alone, as in pursuing improvement in general, or attach to another word to name a specific pursuit. "Looksmaxxing" describes efforts to improve one's appearance, "tokenmaxxing" describes using as much AI as possible at work, and "nonnamaxxing" refers to adopting the habits of an Italian grandmother. Dictionary.com traces the root to "maximum," "maximize" and "max," and links it to "min-maxing," a gaming strategy of pushing a character's strengths until its weak points stop mattering.
The site says searches for "maxxing" and its variations climbed through 2026, with "looksmaxxing" drawing extra attention early in the year as media coverage of the trend grew. Other offshoots such as "cozymaxxing," "moneymaxxing" and "tanmaxxing" also made the rounds. Dictionary.com argues the term works in two directions at once. People use it earnestly to describe real efforts to get better at something, and they use it as a joke, turning a night of movies and snacks at home into a supposed optimization project.
The word also beat out a shortlist that included "affordability," "data center," "odyssey" and "unc." Dictionary.com pointed to affordability's role in debates over housing, health care, gas and groceries, and to data centers as AI use expands. "Odyssey" gained attention with the release of Christopher Nolan's film, and "unc," a slang term for someone seen as out of touch, rounded out the list.
