What to Expect From Apple's Surprise Smart Home Event Next Week

Apple is set to hold a smart home event next week, and the company has kept most of the details under wraps. The "surprise" label means the agenda is not public yet, so the expectations building up around the event rest largely on hints and industry speculation rather than official material.

Past Apple smart home announcements have centered on the Home app, HomeKit compatibility, and home hubs that run automations when the owner is away. Any new hardware or software would likely be judged on whether it makes those pieces easier to set up and more dependable from day to day.

Readers should treat any list of expected products as provisional until Apple confirms it. Event plans can shift, and items that look certain in a rumor cycle sometimes never appear. Once the event is over, the useful test will be whether the announcements add real capability for people who already own compatible accessories, or mainly add new price tags.
