Tesla Trades Its EV Crown for a Bet on Self-Driving Subscriptions

For most of the last decade, Tesla was the company that defined the electric car market. That position has slipped. Rivals, led by BYD in China and a growing field of legacy automakers with their own EV lineups, now sell more battery-electric vehicles than Tesla does, and repeated price cuts have squeezed the margins that once set the company apart.

Tesla's answer is to earn more from the car after it leaves the lot. The company is pushing its driver-assistance and self-driving software, marketed as Full Self-Driving, toward recurring payments instead of one-time purchases. The aim is a revenue stream that keeps arriving for as long as an owner keeps the vehicle. Software is also far more profitable per unit than manufacturing, which requires factories, parts, and labor for every car built.

The logic is straightforward. A vehicle sale is a single transaction with thin margins that shrink whenever prices fall. A subscription repeats each month and costs little to deliver once the software exists. If a meaningful share of owners pay for autonomy features, revenue per vehicle could rise over its lifetime rather than peaking at delivery.

The strategy carries real risks. Tesla's system still requires a supervising driver, and regulators in several markets continue to examine its safety record. Buyers must also decide whether a monthly fee is worth paying, particularly as competitors promise similar features. Tesla has to show that its software is capable enough to justify the price, and that authorities will allow the features it sells.

The stakes reach beyond Tesla. If the subscription model works, other automakers will likely copy it and treat software as a core business line. If it stumbles, the industry may conclude that people are unwilling to pay ongoing fees for driving assistance. Either way, the competition is no longer only about who builds the best electric car. It is also about who keeps earning after the car is sold.
