"Software Is Over" Developer Builds Free Adobe Clones With AI

A developer who argues that "software is over" has released a set of free, open source alternatives to Adobe's Creative Cloud apps, and says the code was built with Anthropic's Claude Opus model. The pitch is that AI coding tools have cut the cost of writing serious creative software so far that one person can challenge a company with decades of product history and a large subscription business.

The ambition is the story, but the projects themselves are early. The source material describes the clones as ambitious and free, yet nowhere near finished. That is a meaningful gap for a category where users judge tools on reliability, file compatibility and the many small features that professionals rely on every day. Building a convincing first version of an image editor or video tool is one thing. Making it handle large files, complex layers and the formats studios actually use is much harder.

The target is well chosen. Adobe's move to subscription pricing has been a steady source of complaints from freelancers and small studios, and many of them have looked for cheaper options. Free tools already exist for parts of this work, including GIMP and Krita for image editing, Inkscape for vector graphics and Blender for 3D and video-related work. Any new project will need a clear reason to exist alongside them, whether that is a sharper focus, a better interface or a particular workflow.

The "software is over" line is clearly rhetorical, and a working demo is not the same as a maintained product. Open source code does not maintain itself, and the real test will be whether these projects attract contributors, ship stable releases and hold up under real creative work. Those are the signals to watch before taking the claim seriously.
