Listeners Push Podcasts Toward Built-In Transcripts

Podcasts·October 10, 2026

The follow-up notes for episode 684 of the ATP podcast, titled "It's Not What Young People Do," are mostly listener mail, but one thread stands out: how podcasts can deliver their own transcripts instead of relying on apps to generate them.

The notes list three routes. A feed can point to a transcript file with the podcast:transcript tag. Apple Podcasts offers its own transcript options. And an MP3 can carry text inside its ID3 metadata using the SYLT tag, which keeps the text with the audio file itself. The notes also flag Overcast's transcription features. For producers, the takeaway is that there is no single standard, and the right choice depends on which apps their listeners use.

The rest of the segment covers a grab bag of tech questions. A listener asked what job queue the hosts use for their own projects, and suggestions included beanstalkd, Ansible, and Faktory. Another listener joked about building a Beowulf cluster out of Mac minis. The notes also mention that RDMA over Thunderbolt arrived in macOS 26.2, and they link to a write-up about running a trillion-parameter AI model on a Mac.

Other items are shorter: whether 8 GB of memory is enough to keep macOS lean, whether a future iPad or iPhone Pro could drive a display the way a Mac does, and a plain-language explainer on passkeys. The notes also mention WWDC 2026, which has already been announced.
