Fitbit Air Gets Its First Firmware Update

Google's Fitbit Air is getting its first software update since launch, and the company's release notes point to a modest, bug-focused set of changes rather than new features. The firmware is rolling out in stages, so owners may see it appear on different days.

The update ships as version 20001.253.2 on iOS and 67.20001.253.2 on Android. Users cannot force it to install. Instead, they can check the device page in the Google Health app, which shows whether the update is available to them yet.

The timing matters for anyone still using older software. Google has been moving Fitbit owners onto the Google Health app, and sideloaded versions of the legacy Fitbit app will not receive these updates. Support for that older app was scheduled to end on July 15, 2026, so people who relied on that workaround will need to switch.

Early Air owners have also complained about automatic workout detection, which in some cases labels sessions inaccurately. Google's roadmap suggests the company is working on that problem, but the update notes did not spell out a fix for it, so buyers should not assume it has been addressed.

For the Air, the update is a sign that Google is treating the tracker as an ongoing product. Firmware fixes that reach devices quickly are a good early signal, though the real test will be whether the workout detection problems and other early complaints get resolved in the releases that follow.
