EA Shuts Down BioWare After Three Decades, Cancels Next Mass Effect

Electronic Arts has shut down BioWare, the role-playing studio that spent more than three decades building some of the genre's most celebrated games. The closure comes with the cancellation of the studio's next Mass Effect project, a serious blow to a franchise fans had hoped would return.

The parent company is also laying off about 400 people as part of the move. For a studio known for long, story-driven campaigns and a loyal community of players, the decision closes a chapter that many fans grew up with.

The timing is hard to ignore. Big-budget narrative games take years and enormous budgets to build, and publishers have grown more cautious about betting on that kind of project. The details released so far are limited, and it is not yet clear how the remaining BioWare work or the existing games will be handled.

For players, the bigger question is whether Mass Effect has a future at all. With the team most associated with the series gone, fans will be watching closely to see whether EA gives the franchise to another studio or lets it rest.
