Crystal Lake Starts Slow, Then Finds Its Hook
Reviews·October 25, 2026

Crystal Lake, the Friday the 13th prequel centered on Pam Voorhees, Jason's mother, opens on a sluggish note. The early episodes spend a lot of time setting the scene and leaning on the franchise's familiar imagery without giving viewers a strong reason to invest. Fans who came for the slasher thrills may find the first stretch a drag.
The choice of focus is the show's most interesting decision. Putting the mother of the franchise's most infamous killer at the center gives the series a different angle on a figure who has mostly lived in the background of the Friday the 13th mythology. The idea has real potential, and the show seems to know it, but it takes too long to make that potential felt.
Once the series stops circling and commits to its main character, the momentum shifts. The story gets tighter, the tension builds with more purpose, and the material starts to feel like it has a reason to exist beyond cashing in on a well-known name. The payoff is uneven, but it is strong enough to make the slow beginning feel like groundwork rather than filler.
Crystal Lake is not a series that asks for instant commitment. Viewers willing to get past the uneven opening will find a story that improves as it goes, and one that treats its central figure as more than a footnote. Those who bail after the first few episodes may miss the point of the show entirely.
